How to set your level honestly
The most common mistake is claiming a level above or below your real one — either way the match is less interesting for both players. A practical guide:
Beginner
A few months with a racket. Your serve goes in inconsistently and rallies break down after a handful of shots. You are looking for someone to hit with and put hours in on court.
Intermediate
You sustain a rally from the baseline, you have a second serve that lands, and you move around the court without thinking about it. You play regularly and you keep score.
Advanced
You control pace, angle and depth deliberately. You have played competitive matches or a club league, and you adapt your game to the opponent in front of you.
If you are torn between two levels, pick the lower one. The Elo rating will correct the estimate within a few matches.
What to agree before the match
Most misunderstandings come from things nobody said out loud. Before you get to the court, agree on:
- Time and the exact court — and what happens if it rains
- Format: best of three sets, a single set, or short sets if time is tight
- Who brings balls, and whether you are splitting the court fee
- Whether the match will be submitted as ranked
