How the ranking works

MatchPoint rankings are based on an Elo rating. Every player starts on an initial rating, and each ranked match updates it according to the result and the rating gap between the two players. What counts is not how many matches you play, but who you play and how you do.

Rankings update as new match results are submitted.

Why the rating gap matters

Beat a player rated well above you and you gain more points than beating someone at your own level. Equally, losing to a player rated well below you costs more. That is what makes a rating converge on your real level reasonably quickly.

Separate ladders per sport

Tennis and padel ratings are entirely separate. A strong tennis player picking up padel does not carry their rating across — they start fresh in the new sport.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Elo rating?

It is a rating system that estimates each player’s relative level from their match results. It comes from chess and is widely used in one-against-one sports.

How many matches until my rating is reliable?

You start on an initial rating, which moves more sharply over your first ranked matches and settles as results accumulate.

Do friendly matches count?

Only matches submitted as ranked update the ladder.

Do I lose points for not playing?

No. Your rating only changes when a ranked match result is submitted.
